Philippines Tourism Report Q2 2016

BMI View: Tourism is seen as an important part of the Philippines' economic future, and has beenacknowledged as a sector of importance by the country's government. Endowed with world class divingsites, luxury beach resorts, and cosmopolitan cities, the country has achieved high levels of growth ininbound arrivals over the last five years. Further liberalisation of the airline industry and a move toimprove infrastructure and the quality of the hotel base should see significant amounts of growth over theforecast period. However, the country still has issues with terrorist activity and crime, which may detersome travellers and an election in 2016 has increased uncertainty over the economic direction of thecountry. Overall, the ingredients for a strong tourism industry are there, but there remains a lot still to do.

Key Updates And Forecasts:

Security fears within Southern Philippines continue to grow, with two groups apparently pledgingallegiance to ISIS. This follows reports of an attack in Jakarta being linked to terrorist groups in thecountry. Additionally, further kidnappings throughout the country could impact tourism demand.

Philippine Airlines has launched a new route to Kuwait City via Dubai from Manila, increasing theconnectivity of the Philippines. With a large expat Filipino population the region was an obvious choicefor expansion.

The Philippines is moving towards establishing tourism on the Pagasa Island Cluster in the Spratlys. Theproposed Senate Bill 2938 would allow the creation of the Pagasa Island Ecotourism Cluster GoverningBoard and would declare the islands of Parola, Kota and Panata as protected areas under the NationalIntegrated Protected Areas System. China disputes sovereignty over the islands and this move to expandtourism may result in a further deterioration of political relations.

Overall, inbound arrivals are set to grow significantly at 44.7% over the forecast period, with Korearemaining the largest single source market at an estimated 2.2mn arrivals by the end of 2020.
