A huge population of well over 200mn, growing investment from major international brands and the expansion ofmodern mass grocery retail spaces in Pakistan all bode well for Pakistan's food and drink market, and spending is expected to rise inthe short term and beyond. The focus will remain primarily upon affordable basic staples, though a fast growing middle class andongoing urbanisation will increase demand for convenience and premium products. However, challenges in the market aresignificant as the devaluation of the rupee has led to cost increases for producers which could price out lower income consumers.We also highlight that informal retail still dominates food and drink sales and quality assurance is very limited due to proliferation ofcounterfeit goods in the country.
