Oman Consumer Electronics Report Q2 2016
BMI View: We are anticipating a subdued year of growth in the Omani consumer electronics market in 2016 owing to the prolonged oil price slump and the heightened economic uncertainty. This year, we are expecting weak growth due to deferred purchases and relatively high levels of market maturity. Nevertheless, our forecast retains a stronger outlook as the economic environment becomes more supportive, although we caution that significant downside risks do exist. There will however be underlying demand drivers including robust population growth, the declining average selling prices of various devices and the introduction of devices with new features such as wearables.
Latest Updates And Industry Developments
Computer Hardware Sales: USD259mn in 2016 to USD291mn in 2020, at a CAGR of 2.6%. Tablet market should return to growth from 2016 after contraction followed the initial boom - while upgrade demand for hybrid notebooks will also support market expansion.
AV Sales: USD175mn in 2016 to USD190mn in 2020, at a CAGR of 1.0%. AV segment expected to continue to underperform but performance will be much improved from 2015-2016 when TV set market saturation and digital camera volume cannibalisation resulted in contraction in spending.
Handset Sales: USD737mn in 2016 to USD766mn in 2020, at a CAGR of 1.2%. The handset market was the most dynamic segment during the smartphone boom, but a combination of saturation and price erosion is expected to see the market move to a much slower growth trajectory over the medium term.
