The Nigerian mobile market has solid scope for organic mobile subscriber growth owing to rising incomes, a vastpopulation and favourable demographics. We note that there are a large number of inactive SIMs that continue to be activelydiscounted and distort the market size. Relatively low mobile penetration rates indicate that there remains plenty of scope forexpansion, especially in rural areas. The three largest operators by subscriber numbers, MTN, Airtel and Globacom, are aggressivelydeploying their 3G and 4G networks, which paves the way for the strong uptake of advanced mobile data services in the country.However, subscribers are highly price sensitive and the expansion of services into rural areas is expensive.
