Nicaragua's economy is set to struggle further during the latter part of 2020 and going into 2021 due to combinedeffects of the Covid-19 pandemic and hurricanes Eta and Iota. This will put pressure on healthcare spending capabilities, likelyresulting in a loss of funding for previously agreed healthcare projects and meaning healthcare spending and coverage will remainminimal even as the population often struggles to secure satisfactory healthcare and medicines, particularly in the many rural areasof the country. Despite this, we continue to forecast healthcare and pharmaceutical spending will expand over our forecast period.However, while there are undoubtedly potential long-term opportunities arising from a growing chronic disease burden, Nicaraguawill remain among the least attractive markets for innovative drugmakers, due to its small market size and low average purchasingpower.
