Nepal Telecommunications Report 2015

Nepal's difficult terrain and remote geographic position are largely responsible for its low mobilepenetration rate. The country had achieved an 82.5% penetration at the end of 2014, a rate BMI expects toremain below 100% during our 2015-2019 forecast period. New players could lead to faster growth, butBMI believes there is not really sufficient demand in more rural areas and, in any case, the likeliestcandidates have proved reluctant to move forward with service launches. Mobile technologies do offer greatpotential for expanding broadband to more rural areas of the country and already take up of mobile data isstrong, although often using slower technologies than 3G. 4G licensing has been proposed but is likely tooccur only in the medium to long term.

Key Data

The fixed-line market showed slight growth in 2014, but we forecast declines over 2015-2019 as mobiletechnologies increasingly dominate the landscape.

Mobile growth is expected to be robust throughout our forecast period pushing the penetration rate to99.7% by the end of 2019.

Mobile broadband technologies will be responsible for the bulk of growth in Nepal, pushing the growthrate to 9.2% on average over our five-year forecast period.
