Mozambique Freight Transport and Shipping Q1 2019
With coal such a key export of Mozambique’s, it is unwelcome news for both the rail and shipping sectors thatMozambique's coal mining sector will continue to be pressured by both subdued coal prices and the country's undevelopedinfrastructure framework. Coal exports from Mozambique, which have ramped up considerably over the past four years, will begin tostagnate without additional project development, despite solid demand growth for key import partners India and Japan. Therefore, itis welcome news that the development of the 150km Swazi rail link will open up a dedicated general freight corridor to the Port ofRichards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique. We believe that the freight industry is well-placed to benefit from such transport infrastructure developments and we maintain our positive forecasts for all freight modes, asthe industry benefits from the investment in projects in this sphere, as well as the expected outperformance of the infrastructure, natural gas and mining sectors.
