Mozambique Freight Transport Report Q1 2015
The outlook for Mozambique's freight transport sector is positive. The country is enjoying a period ofrobust economic growth of around 7.0%, which we expect to continue over our medium-term forecastperiod to 2019. An expanding consumer base will drive imports of containerised goods up slowly, whileinvestment projects targeting the country's increasing exploitation of its natural recourses - coal andoffshore gas - will grow demand for imports of capital goods.
However, the two key drivers of growth in throughput at the ports will be demand from hinterland SouthernAfrican countries, and the development of the coal mining sector. Mozambique's ports are positioningthemselves as entry and exit points for landlocked countries such as Zimbabwe and Malawi, for imports ofcontainer goods and exports of agricultural produce, but it is Mozambique's nascent coal mining sectorwhich will fuel the real growth in volumes. Mozambique is set to enjoy one of the world's fastest growthrates in coal production over the years ahead, albeit coming off a low base.
