Mexico Consumer & Retail Q1 2019
Mexico's consumer outlook remains positive for 2019. Consumer confidence levels have surged since populist AndrésManuel López Obrador won the presidential election in July 2018, reflecting optimism around the new administration's pledge toraise the minimum wage and boost living standards. This, combined with rising remittance inflows from the US, and strongereconomic activity, will boost consumer spending prospects over the year ahead. While inflationary pressures caused by a recent sell-off in the Mexican Peso are likely to weigh on non-essential purchases over the near-term, our Country Risk team expect thecurrency to strengthen over 2019 which combined with rising interest rates, will see inflation moderate, further supporting ourpositive view.
