Mauritius Insurance Report Q2 2015

BMI View: The Mauritian insurance market is small by global standards but well established, with aparticularly high penetration rate in the life sector. Both life and non-life insurance is expected to recordhealthy premium growth throughout our forecast period to 2019. Domestic economic growth in Mauritiuswill drive an expansion of household consumption and in turn demand for non-life products, such as motorand property insurance, and life products, including retirement savings plans, will rise.

2015 will see the continued dominance of the life insurance sector, which accounts for around 70% of grossinsurance premiums written in the country. Mauritius has a strong tradition of life savings products, including retirement/pension plans, and as such life insurance penetration is already high (at 4.5% of GDP).

Growth in 2015 will largely be predicated upon economic growth in Mauritius and an improvement in thecurrently low interest rates which may deter some consumers in the life sector. Motor insurance is expectedto continue to dominate the non-life sector, and with household consumption rates increasing there ispotential for premium growth based on higher volumes of new car sales.
