Key View:

Consumer spending is strong in 2018, buoyed by the populist policies introduced by the Malaysian government alongwith an expanding economy, and low levels of inflation and unemployment. High-frequency indicators also point to the health ofthe Malaysian consumer with consumer confidence and retail sales picking up since the beginning of 2018. Adding further upsideto the consumer outlook is the continued uptake in household loans forming a larger share of overall loans undertaken byconsumers, creating opportunities for spending on big-ticket items. Private consumption will, however, slow year-on-year in 2019owing to the reinstatement of the Sales and Service Tax in Q418 whose effects will be felt in Q119 and beyond. Malaysia remainsone of the most attractive consumer markets in Asia.
