Malaysia Agribusiness Q1 2020

Malaysia Agribusiness Q1 2020

Key View:

Malaysia's agribusiness sector remains volatile and susceptible to a number of challenges across our forecast period. With this in mind, we made a number of revisions to both our production and consumption forecasts across the four markets wetrack in this update. Despite this we remain broadly positive in our outlook across all of the markets we track, with the exceptionof output in both sugar and cocoa, which we see contracting through to 2023. More specifically, we point to the palm oil industry -its most emblematic sector - being undermined by low prices and growing structural challenges, particularly significant labourshortages, while sugar manufacturers are also facing challenges amid the ongoing liberalisation of the sector. Meanwhile, the cocoaindustry is undergoing a revival, with grindings on the rise; however, local cocoa bean production will not recover in the comingyears.
