Japan Food & Drink Q4 2020
Japan’s economy is beginning to reopen, following the lifting of the state of emergency, allowing previously restrictedsectors including food services to reopen. We hold the view that the food and non-alcoholic drinks sector is positioned well, as mostgrocery outlets remained open during the state of emergency. Furthermore, as the economic reality of Covid-19 continues to feedthrough to consumers, we expect the prioritisation of food and non-alcoholic drinks purchases to continue. Medium-term growth infood and drink sales will be driven by premiumisation and the Japanese consumer’s prioritisation of quality produce. However, economic downside pressures from the impact of Covid-19-related government interventions will likely drag on growth prospects.
