Japan's consumer outlook for 2019 remains bleak with consumption dragged by economic headwinds, the sales tax hikescheduled to take effect October 2019 and falling consumer confidence. Retail sales have also dropped although we do expect it topick up in the second and third quarter of 2019 as consumers front-load their purchases before the tax hike takes effect. Meanwhile,the tight labour market and wage growth will help to somewhat offset the effects of the tax hike and support consumption.
