Italy Metals Report 2015
BMI View: The outlook for Italy's metals sector remains fraught with challenge, with weak economicgrowth, falling capacity and increasing competition combining to stymie production. While consolidationand strategic developments are likely to ensure the industry's long-term survival, we expect the operatingenvironment for Italian producers of steel and other metals to remain extremely challenging over 2015 andbeyond.
Italy's metals sector is at a crucial stage of its development. Having traditionally been a high volumeproducer of key industrial metals, including steel and aluminium, the country will need to consider ways tomake itself competitive once again in an increasingly challenging global landscape. The Italian steel sector, while remaining the second largest in Europe, is going through a painful stage of readjustment. Faced withincreasing obstacles, it looks increasingly likely that, going forward, Italy's crude steel output will fallincreasingly short of the turn to the 30mn tonnes per annum (tpa) that regularly witnessed up until the 2008financial crisis.
