Italy Defence & Security Report 2018
We forecast defence spending to grow at a modest pace in Italy in 2018 and the following years, with militaryexpenditure set to stabilise around 1.1% of GDP over the coming decade. This contrasts with the sharp contraction in defencespending seen following the eurozone crisis, which put severe strain on Italy's public finances, but a return to rapid growth is off thetable owing to elevated debt levels and weak economic growth. In line with the 2015 Defence White Paper, the government will putan increased emphasis on new procurement, while the armed forces will see a gradual decline in terms of headcount. Spending onnew equipment will be supported by the rising participation in surveillance operations in the Mediterranean and by the need todevelop effective counter-terrorism capabilities.
