BMI View: Despite some positive developments over 2017, the outlook for the Italian consumer remains relatively subdued heading in to 2018. The economy is on firmer footing helped by an upswing in activity, which has seen unemployment come down over the last year. However, real wage growth has fallen into negative territory and the labour market is increasingly made up of part-time or contract workers, reducing long-term financial stability. These positive developments are not translating into strong spending growth over the coming year and with an election in early 2018, this could add further cautiousness to household budgets.
