Iran Renewables Q4 2018

Iran Renewables Q4 2018

Key View:

Our forecasts for the development of non-hydro renewables in Iran have always been conservative, and we madenegative adjustments after the US unilaterally pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal in May and vowed to re-introduce sanctions.Hawkish comments by American officials indicate little wriggle room for European firms to continue engaging with Iran withoutcutting off access to the US market, and a decision by British firm Quercus in August to pull the plug on a USD570mn solar project istestament to the real impact on the ground. Our core forecasts envisage a rise in non-hydro generation from 1.05TWh in 2018 to1.79TWh in 2027, alongside an increase in capacity from 600MW to 1,039MW, buoyed by activity by indigenous firms and therelative resilience of some investors to US sanctions policy, particularly those from Asia.
