Hungary Power Report Q2 2015

BMI View: Power generation will rise by steadily over the forecast period, from 36.4TWh in 2015 to38.8TWh by 2024. Thermal energy will remain the single largest component in Hungary's power mix, andan expansion of gas-fired electricity will constitute most of the expected rise in output. Meanwhile, consumption of power will rise by from 38.4TWh to 43.5TWh over the same timeframe, underpinned by asteady growth in the construction sector. The major background development will be massive investment inthe Paks power station which will significantly expand production of nuclear power just beyond the tenyearforecast period.

Plans to modernise the Paks nuclear power plant continue to progress. In December, Hungary formallyawarded nuclear energy contracts worth EUR6bn, mostly to the Russian energy companyAtomenergoproekt, to maintain Paks' two 1,200MW reactors after completion. This means that Russianfirms will be responsible for building and maintaining the plant.
