Hungary Consumer & Retail Report Q4 2017

BMI View: Over the short-term, Hungary's consumer market will experience a boost in consumer spending.

This is on the back of rising incomes, favourable borrowing costs as well as modest inflationary pressures.

Our view is further supported by the upward trend in retail trade data in H117.

Private consumption will remain the key driver of economic growth in Hungary over our five-year forecast period to 2021. We expect domestic consumption to be boosted by lower borrowing costs and expansionary fiscal policy. We forecast real private consumption growth of 4.5% in 2017 to be well above the 1.6% average annual growth rate for private consumption between 2000 and 2015.
