Hong Kong Retail Report Q3 2015

BMI View: 2015 will see a continuance of 2014's sluggish performance, mainly due to the drop in thenumber of tourists from the mainland, however long term prospects are extremely positive. The Hong Kongeconomy is expected to continue to grow, along with the average household incomes, resulting in morefamilies with greater disposable income. As a result we expect spending on aspirational, non-essentialgoods to increase as the Hong Kong population has preference for more luxuries.

The overall economic outlook for Hong Kong is a healthy one with GDP expected to grow steadily, withGDP per capita to grow by an average of 6.15% a year, during our forecast period from USD42,327 in 2015to USD53,770 in 2019 in nominal terms. External factors associated with sluggish inbound tourismspending and local political unrest were largely responsible for 2014's disappointing performance and themarket must remain alert to these emerging yet unpredictable circumstances. In particular we anticipatestrong future growth prospects of personal care & insurance spending, which we expect to continue toconstitute the highest proportion of overall household expenditure throughout our forecast period. We alsoforecast robust growth in spending on alcoholic drinks & tobacco over our review period, with clothing &footwear also taking a bigger slice of the household budget.
