Honduras Freight Transport and Shipping Report Q4 2017
Political uncertainty in much of the Latin America region poses downside risks to growth, but we expect broad policy continuity to support economic growth. Trade growth will also be driven by growing US demand for imports and by rising remittances from the US which will bolster domestic demand for imports - all of which will drive up volumes in the country's freight transport sector.
We hold a positive view on the road haulage sector in Honduras, expecting it to be the outperformer over the medium term. Rising domestic household spending power on the back of strong remittances and commodity prices will drive up demand for imported consumer goods supporting road haulage volume growth, while the completion of construction and improvement projects will benefit the mode in the medium and long term. Growth in air freight volumes in Honduras will continue to expand in line with real GDP growth in the country in 2017, as the sector will benefit from an uptick in exports and rising remittances which will boost domestic spending power and demand for air-freighted consumer goods. The launch of new direct flights connecting Honduras with Europe and the US in H217, as well as increasing tourism, will also bolster volumes. Looking further ahead, investment in new airport facilities will support long-term volume expansion.
