Greece Freight Transport and Shipping 2019
Although we envisage a modest economic recovery to take place in Greece post-bailout, marking a period of stabilityand rising confidence, a strong rebound is unlikely given persistent domestic weaknesses, stemming largely from the bankingsector and fiscal restrictions placed on the government. A recovery in confidence across sectors, including households, combinedwith growing new order books and still buoyant export expectations, highlight the optimism over Greece’s economic outlook, whichwill have a positive knock-on effect on the freight industry, at least in the short term. Underlining the strategic importance ofregional cooperation, the governments of Bulgaria and Greece have put pen to paper to a joint declaration to further develop twotransport infrastructure projects. The modernisation of the Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandroupolis-Burgas-Varna railway link and theconstruction of a high-speed road from Alexandroupolis in Greece to Burgas in Bulgaria. Both of these projects highlight the stridesthat are being taken in the transport infrastructure sector in order to enhance regional connectivity.
