Ghana Retail Report Q2 2016

BMI View: We expect to see an uptick in Ghana's real GDP growth in 2016, coming in at 4.9%, markingthe beginning of the country's recovery after a couple of difficult years. Inflation will remain high but,forecast at 15.5%, will be lower than last year. We also expect to see greater stability in the value of thecedi. Essentials spending will continue to take the lion's share of household spending but we do expect togrowth in many non-essential retail sub-sectors, albeit from a low base.

Key Views & Developments

Net income per household is forecast to reach USD981 in 2016.

We expect total household spending to amount to USD7.9bn in 2016, up from USD7.4bn in 2015.

Food & non-alcoholic drinks spending will reach USD3.4bn in 2016 while housing & utilities spendingwill amount to USD0.8bn, accounting for more than a half of total household expenditure.

Over 528,000 households will be in the USD10,000-plus income bracket by the end of 2016, representing7.7% of total.
