Germany Insurance Report Q3 2015

BMI View: Germany is an excellent example of a country where the ageing of the population willcontribute to steady growth in demand for retirement income solutions. Combined with the insurers' accessto capital and proven ability to develop and distribute innovative products, this should underpin steadygrowth in life insurance premiums through the forecast period. Conversely, there are clear constraints ongrowth in each of the three largest sub-sectors of the non-life segment. Nevertheless, the non-life segmentshould remain profitable for most of the insurers through the forecast period.

Dominated by world-class multi-nationals that can achieve economies of scale from within their operationsin Germany, the country is one of the largest and most dynamic of any national insurance sectors that aresurveyed by BMI. As recent developments indicate, the leading insurers have clear capacity to develop anddistribute innovative products. Brand is an important differentiator. The insurers are also very effective atcontrolling costs. In part because the sector includes some of the world's leading reinsurance companies, risks can easily be laid off in global markets. Although the introduction of the European Union's Solvency IIregime from the beginning of June will require some administrative changes, the insurers have access to thecapital that they will need.
