Germany Insurance Report Q2 2015

BMI View: As of early 2015, the strengths of Germany's world class insurers remain obvious. Theseinclude scale, clear branding strategies, multi-channel distribution and access to both capital and globalreinsurance markets. Above all, the insurers are innovative in terms of distribution initiatives and productfeatures. With interest rates remaining low, we believe that insurers are looking to acquire alternativeassets to counter the effects of slow economic growth and downwards pressure on prices in most subsectorsof the non-life segments.

The latest developments in Germany's sophisticated insurance sector highlight how the leading players aredealing successfully with a number of challenges. In the non-life segment, the relative lack of naturalcatastrophe losses means that the insurers' good control of claims (and other) costs is coming to the fore. Inthe life segment, which is mature by most metrics, the insurers are developing and distributing new productsand/or using technology to make it easier to process new policies. At a time that interest rates are, and willlikely remain, very low, the insurers are looking at alternative investments - including infrastructure.
