BMI View: The German consumer is in a position of strength going into 2018, given a relatively optimistic outlook for the economy, low levels of unemployment, easy credit conditions and low inflation. Consumer confidence is hitting long-time highs as well, as Germans feel better about their financial situation. However, this is not quite translating into a boom in spending over 2018. Part of the reason for this are due to ingrained attitudes towards saving over taking on excessive debt, as well as sluggish wage growth which is holding back spending.
