Gambia and Senegal Country Risk Report 20 2018

Gambia and Senegal Country Risk Report 20 2018

President Adama Barrow's apparent decision to backtrack on a commitment to step down after three years will anger his former coalition partners who helped bring him to power in 2017. Although this will not lead to a widespread unrest in and of itself, should the Barrow government fail to deliver on key campaign promises, it may be used to channel public frustrations, which could lead to unrest and knock the economic recovery off course.

The Gambia's economic recovery will gather momentum over the coming quarters as low inflation, easier access to credit and rising remittance flows boost domestic demand. Stronger tourism sector growth will also provide tailwinds, boosting both domestic demand (through the creation of new jobs) and investment into the economy.

Agriculture will remain the dominant sector in The Gambia, though investment into other industries (such as tourism) will help drive real GDP growth.
