France Insurance Report Q2 2015

BMI View: In the short term, the key driver of total premiums will be the weakness of the EUR relative tothe USD. Recent data from the FFSA, the insurers' trade association, confirms that both the life and thenon-life segment are growing in local currency terms. We expect that they will continue to do so. Theleading life insurance companies will take advantage of their recent - and very large - capital raisings todevelop and distribute attractive new products, including the recently introduced Euro-growth funds. In thenon-life segment, the companies will continue to increase prices (and control costs): however, thestagnation of the economy means that the non-life companies are unlikely to enjoy much volume growth.

The formidable strengths of France's insurance sector remain obvious. In no particular order, these includeeconomies of scale, powerful brands, multi-channel distribution, discipline in underwriting, access to capitaland reinsurance markets and demonstrable ability to develop attractive new products. The latest data fromthe FFSA, the trade association, confirms that both the non-life and the life segments have been growing inlocal currency terms. In the non-life segment, the expansion has been despite the weakness of the economy.

In the life segment, the insurers have benefited from the attractive returns to investors/ savers from theirproducts. Sales of unit-linked products have been growing very quickly.
