The tourism industry in Croatia, though not operating on the same scale as the leading European destinations, isnonetheless making rapid gains and proving an important source of employment and expenditure in the country. Croatia issuccessfully building a reputation as a popular summer holiday destination to rival other regional markets (such as Greece andTurkey) and is also diversifying its tourism brand to incorporate sectors such as gastro-tourism and city-breaks. As such it isattracting a growing number of visitors, both from European states and from affluent markets in the Asia Pacific and Middle Easternregions. With visitor numbers rising rapidly, Croatia will need to take steps to ensure growth is sustainable in order to avoid theprotests against the advance of mass-market tourism, which are becoming more frequent in other popular holiday destinations.
