Costa Rica Freight Transport and Shipping Report Q4 2017
BMI View: Trade growth in Costa Rica will be positive over the course of our forecast period. Growth indomestic imports and exports, supported by greater flows of regional trade following the completion of thePanama Canal expansion in June 2016, will ensure that all freight modes in the country see volumesincrease. This growth will be supported by the continued development of trade deals with regional andglobal economies, such as Colombia. Growth in global trade will support Costa Rica's trade growth despitea rise in downside risks such as monetary tightening by the largest economies and rise in protectionism.
We anticipate steady growth in road freight volumes in Costa Rica in 2017 and over the course of ourmedium-term forecast period to 2021. In the near term, we expect that the expansion will be drivenprimarily by a surge in public works investment by the government, which will necessitate the transport ofconstruction materials and project cargos. Looking further ahead, increasing consumer spending power willsupport growth as demand for containerised consumer goods rises.
