Mining activity in the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville is significantly under-developed and thecountry has yet to attract big, international players present in other African nations. The internationalmining community has taken steps to begin operations in the country, with Zanaga Iron Ore and SundanceResources among the companies leading the charge, although a lack of sufficient transport infrastructureand high political risk remains an impediment.
Latest Developments & Structural Trends
In November 2016, Sundance Resources announced that it has executed a term sheet for AUD1.3mn innew funding to move its Mbalam Nabeba iron ore project forward. The company announced in January2016 it was delaying the start of the Mbalam-Nabeba iron ore project on the Congo-Brazzaville-Cameroon border after one of its partners pulled out.
Similarly, in November 2016, Equatorial Resources' local subsidiary, Congo Mining Exploration Ltd,announced that it would invest USD1.2bn in its Badondo iron ore scheme in north-west Congo-Brazzaville.
