Chile Renewables Q4 2019
Key View:
We anticipate Chile to become one of the most rapidly expanding non-hydropower renewables markets in LatinAmerica. The country's high solar and wind power potential, and attractive regulatory environment will draw significant investmentfrom the private sector over the next decade. The government's plans to reduce the role of coal-fired thermal power, combined withthe falling costs of some of these technologies, will also play a role in boosting strong growth in the renewables segment, with acombination of biomass, solar, wind and some geothermal compensating for falling thermal output. We continue to highlight, however, that the national T&D network will need extensive expansion and modernisation in order to facilitate the integration ofgreater renewables capacity. Recent progress on improving T&D between the northern and central grids is therefore a good signand will begin to alleviate pressure on the project pipeline.
