Central America will see rising disposable incomes continue to drive growth in food sales and increasing formalisation inthe mass grocery retail sector. Downside risks remain particularly as a result of the deteriorating fiscal situation in Costa Rica andheightened political uncertainty in Guatemala. Household spending in Honduras and El Salvador will continue to be driven bysteady remittance inflows. Lower income households rely on staple foods but will buy more produce as incomes increase, whiletourism and a growing middle class will be the main drivers of premiumisation across the region.
