The market benefits from Canada's proximity to the US, meaning that UStourists make up a major proportion of visitors to Canada. As a result, the hotels and hospitality sector iswell-developed and receives a sustained level of investment. Canada's general elections in October 2015 resulted in the overthrow of the Conservative government andthe election of the Liberal Party with Justin Trudeau as prime minister. We do not expect this change ofgovernment to impact our forecasts, as there is a broad political consensus supporting the expansion ofthe tourism sector.

However, we expect the Liberal government to focus more strongly on green issues than the previousgovernment, which may lead to greater investment opportunities in the ecotourism sector.

We are forecasting arrivals growth of 1.17% in 2016, to 18.9mn, driven by the growth in US tourism. Wenow expect 13.3mn US tourists to visit Canada in 2016.
