BMI View: Despite further reductions in the price for oil, and its negative impact on Canada's exportmarket, we expect to see Canada post real GDP growth of 1.8% in 2016. Household incomes are forecast tocontinue growing, with further improvements in employment rates and increasing wages. The Bank ofCanada is likely to maintain the overnight rate of interest at 0.5% for the remainder of 2016, with inflationremaining comfortably within its target range. As a result, we expect Canada's dynamic retail sector todeliver positive expansion over the course of the year.

We expect total household spending to amount toUSD844bn in 2016, down by 1.2%, mostly due toappreciated US dollar. In Canadian dollar terms, we expect a rise of 4.2% this year.

Essential spending will continue to account for the majority of household spending, with the largestsector represented by housing and utilities at 24.7% in 2016.
