Cambodia and Laos Shipping Report Q1 2016

BMI View: We anticipate continued strong growth in the major ports of Myanmar and Cambodia, in termsof both gross tonnage throughput, and container handling. Although the conclusion of the trans-pacific pactwill offer some downside risk to Cambodian exports, we expect that the negative aspects will be outweighedby the positive. Strong economic growth in both countries, and in landlocked Laos which also uses theports, will see rising consumer demand, boosting box throughput, and strong investment, which willnecessitate the import of dry bulk goods such as steel and cement, and project cargos.

Looking first at Myanmar, we believe that the country has strong fundamentals with regards to demand forshipping services, and the country is seeking to establish itself as a regional shipping hub, serving not onlyits domestic demand, but also providing transhipment and transit services. The improving economicopenness is encouraging investment and driving the development of the country's various hydrocarbon, mineral and agricultural commodities, which we feel will drive growth in bulk throughput over the next fewyears. In addition, container volumes are set to soar, due to increased consumer demand for imported goods,in conjunction with the recovery of Myanmar's textile and garment manufacturing industries, which form asignificant portion of the country's container exports. However, until the expansions of the various existingports, and the development of new ports, shipping lines will continue to be deterred by the poor portinfrastructure, shallow drafts and severe congestion, In addition to the higher costs and delays necessitatedby transhipment from larger vessels before being freighted to Myanmar.
