Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar Freight Transport and Shipping Q4 2018
Trade growth in both nominal and real terms in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar is poised to be not only positive over thecourse of the medium-term forecast period (2018-2022), but also relatively healthy. In all three countries, we believe thatconstruction activity will remain heightened, supporting investment in transport infrastructure, while increasing garment exports inCambodia, especially, and Myanmar underpin healthy freight growth. Meanwhile, the stellar rise in mining production in Laos hasbeen accompanied by similar increases to state coffers in the form of mining-related fees and royalty charges, which now accountfor approximately 20% of total domestic revenue for the government. However, the possibility of a full-blown US-China trade warcould see a reduction in global risk appetite, which would not bode well for frontier markets like Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.Although on the flip side, all three countries could benefit from a rethinking of current supply chains that could see them moreinvolved at the expense of China in a bid to win US contracts.
