Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar Agribusiness Report Q2 2018

BMI View:

The outlook for agricultural production and food consumption in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar is bright, amid risingforeign investors' interest, more supportive government policies and the large potential to increase productivity. The three countrieswill remain broadly self-sufficient for agricultural products, but the region has a long way to go before it will be able to generatesurpluses across a varied number of commodities. Myanmar is the most promising spot. Meanwhile, agriculture in Laos will remainbased on subsistence farming and continue to lag neighbours including Myanmar, Cambodia as well as regional agriculturalpowerhouses Thailand and Vietnam. We see some pockets of opportunities, in terms of rice exports from Cambodia and Myanmarand of burgeoning local sectors (feed and sugar in Cambodia, coffee in Laos, dairy, sugar in Myanmar), which may become successstories should proper investment be channelled towards them.
