The three South East Asian countries of Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar are going through aperiod of strong economic expansion. This is driving growth across the countries' freight modes. With theexception of Myanmar's rail freight sector, which is being affected by a weaker mining industry, positivegrowth is anticipated for all sectors, including the main sea ports of Cambodia and Myanmar, aswell overall trade volumes. Myanmar's political liberalisation is particularly significant, with the countryset to achieve the highest growth in GDP and road freight tonnage in 2017. Increasing consumerpurchasing power will also be a major driver of trade and throughput in all three countries.
While trade growth in Myanmar will slow modestly in 2017, this is attributable to base effects followingextraordinarily fast growth last year. The general trend over the course of our forecast period to 2021 isfor the rapid and ongoing expansion of trade in the country. Massive investment in infrastructure willprovide a boost, given the need to transport the associated goods. Over the longer term, infrastructureinvestment will support the growth of other sectors as freight transport becomes more efficient.
