BMI View: Despite operational challenges, the food and drink sectors in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmarwill offer substantial opportunities for investors across the forecast period and beyond. These opportunitieswill be driven by rising incomes, favourable demographics and increasing urban populations. However, asthe majority of consumers fall within the low income band, opportunities in these markets will tend to lie inmass market offerings with little scope for premiumisation in the foreseeable future.

We are particularly positive about growth across all three countries in both the alcoholic and soft drinkssegments, supported by large youth populations and rising incomes. This has resulted in sustainedinvestment from global players, including Carlsberg, Heineken, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, offeringcompetition to state-owned players.

Japan-based AEON opened its first supermarket in Cambodia on 31 March 2017, trading in Phnom Penhunder the Maxvalu Express banner.
