Bulgaria Petrochemicals Report 2016

The Bulgarian petrochemicals industry is set to remain small and uncompetitive over the next five yearswith little foreign interest in investing in a high-risk business environment. While polymer production hasbeen boosted by the decline in naphtha prices, the fertiliser sector remains vulnerable to supply-side shocksin the form of gas feedstock restrictions from Russia. As such, growth in petrochemicals consumption islikely to be increasingly served by imports.

Bulgarian petrochemicals output enjoyed a surge in 2014 as the country's economy continued its steadyalbeit slow recovery. The index for rubber and plastic output grew by an average of 4.6% y-o-y in theJanuary-August period of 2014, while chemicals output grew 8.0% y-o-y. This compares favourably withoverall manufacturing growth of 4.0%.
