Brazil's growing petrochemicals imports at a time of record domestic low capacity utilisation underline the Brazilianpetrochemicals industry's lack of competitiveness. The US-China trade war is also fuelling an influx of cheaper imports from the US,which had been intended for the Chinese and Asian markets. The sector's decline is exacerbated by the corruption scandal that hasundermined confidence and the ability of domestic petrochemicals producers, under the cosh of massive fines, to respond tofuture domestic consumption growth. Brazil is unlikely to return to pre-recession levels of economic performance within the nextfive years.
