Belgium Power Report Q2 2016

Belgium Power Report Q2 2016

BMI View: Belgium will become increasingly reliant on electricity imports due to the decommissioning ofits nuclear reactors. Only non-hydropower renewable power will experience any growth throughout ourforecast period, which will not be enough to cover the gap in electricity generation. A well developed gridinfrastructure and interconnections will ensure Belgium will still be able to import the deficit fromneighbouring countries.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

We currently forecast total generation to decrease from 74.8TWh in 2016 to 40.5TWh in 2025, due tonuclear power plants being decommissioned from 2022 onwards. Currently there is no major capacityforecast to be added to cover the void left by nuclear generation. Therefore, we are forecasting anincrease in electricity imports by Belgium.

Belgium has restarted the Tihange 2 nuclear reactor, despite protestations from neighbouring Germanyover safety issues. The plant was originally shut down due to tiny cracks being discovered in the reactorcasings.

Belgium has decided to extend the lifetime of all its nuclear power plants, with the earliest closurehappening in 2022. The government has affirmed it remains committed to its goal to close all nuclearreactors by 2025.
