Bangladesh Telecommunications Report Q2 2018

BMI View:

We have extended our forecasts to 2022 and made no significant changes to the long-term outlook of the Bangladeshtelecoms sector, which has performed largely in--line with our expectation. A mobile penetration rate of just over 80% signals roomfor growth, although this number could be driven down should the regulator engage in deactivating inactive SIMs. Robi Axiata andAirel Bangladesh's merger creates the second largest operator in Bangladesh's mobile market, which could see further competitionafter CityCell had its license and spectrum reinstated by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. 4G could also make its debut in the firsthalf of 2018, with the regulator set to allocate spectrum to all 5 mobile operators. The market, however, still suffers from poorregulation and high costs, as the telecoms sector is still viewed by the government as a cash-cow and the regulator regularly makespolicy U-turns.
