Austria Renewables Q1 2018
BMI View: Austria is one of the largest renewables markets in Europe, with a favourable policy regime forboth wind and biomass, consolidated by a centre-left led coalition government in recent years. However, the October 2017 election has heralded clouds on the renewables horizon, with the centre right AustrianPeople's Party entering into negotiations with the right-wing nationalist Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) toform a coalition, after the FPÖ came in third, only just behind the erstwhile governing Social Democrats, which finished second. Separately, the splitting for the German-Austrian bidding zone in October 2018 isexpected to see electricity prices rise, benefitting power generators, but also subduing consumption levels, further limiting incentives for new renewable projects. Overall, we therefore retain our restrained growthoutlook for the market in our 10-year forecast until 2026, but with risks now slanted largely to thedownside.
