The Australian telecommunications operators are aggressively developing their LTE and LTE-Advanced networks, as wellas preparing for the launch of 5G services. Revenue growth will come from upselling advanced mobile data services to a matureconsumer base with a growing appetite for data. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (AMCA) will auction 125MHzof spectrum in the 3.6GHz band in October 2018 in an effort to equip operators with ‘5G-suitable’ frequencies. The upcomingspectrum auction will prepare operators to deploy 5G, although upselling legacy voice subscriptions to data services and wirelinesubstitution remain key growth drivers before the new technology is rolled out. Greater flexibility in terms of technology, with theaddition of satellite and cable and the move towards vectoring and fibre-to-the node has helped uptake.
