Australia Autos Report Q2 2015

The implementation of the Japan-Australia Free Trade Agreement on January 15 2015 sounds the death bellfor Australia's already faltering autos industry, as Japanese-made cars become even more competitiverelative to their locally-produced counterparts. The FTA calls for the removal of 5% import tariffs onJapanese vehicles and the dying Australian production sector is unlikely to be able to weather the influx ofmore affordable cars.

The cuts will not be substantial to end-consumers, as the 5% tariff was always imposed on the 'landed cost'of the vehicle, not its (higher) recommended retail price, according to a report by the Carsguide.com.auwebsite. As an indication, Toyota's Corolla's price should fall by between AUD500-1,000 as a result of theremoval of the 5% levy, with Mazda and Subaru also cutting some model prices by a similar sum.

Moreover, these reduced prices will only apply to Japanese vehicles produced within Japan. Cars such asthe Toyota Hilux (made in Thailand) or the Kluger sport utility vehicle (SUV) (made in the US) will notsee their prices fall.
