Argentina Defence & Security 2020
Years of underinvestment have the left Argentina's military in poor shape. Outdated hardware is in dire need ofreplacement, however a combination of a lack of political desire to invest in the military and economic difficulties mean that this isunlikely to happen over our forecast period. The election of the Peronist candidate Alberto Fernandez in October 2019's electionmeans that the small progress made by the former government in defence is unlikely to continue. While Argentina's domesticdefence sector is able to produce a range of equipment and has the possibility to develop further, a combination of a lack ofinvestment and poor export competitiveness will mean that it continues to flounder. A majority of defence spending will go towardspersonnel costs. Any acquisitions that will be made will be of second-hand equipment, bought with price as the key consideration.
