Algeria Agribusiness Q1 2019
With wheat and dairy production systematically short of consumption, Algeria is a major importer of food products. Theongoing financial difficulties of the government owing to prolonged low oil prices and weak government revenues are starting toaffect consumption as the government enacted import controls and VAT increases on some commodities. Agricultural productionremains very dependent on the weather. This, coupled with low yields, will keep output growth weak over the coming years. Algeriawill remain a key importer of wheat and dairy products. The country is increasingly expanding trade links with countries such asBrazil and India, especially for dairy and beef products, and moving away from its traditional suppliers, such as France.
